Selfhood – Young People Led Tour of Robert Mapplethorpe

A young people led tour of ARTIST ROOMS: Robert Mapplethorpe. Thu 21 February, 11.30am

 

Robert Mapplethorpe  is widely regarded as one of the world’s most important artists of the late twentieth century. The group of photographs in ARTIST ROOMS is one of the best collections of his work in the world. The selection of work on display at The Atkinson includes iconic self-portraits, studies of ?owers, portraits of many of the most in?uential artists and celebrities of the New York cultural scene in the 1980s. These include the artist's close friend and muse Patti Smith and fellow artists Andy Warhol and David Hockney.

 

 

Join young people from the Sefton Youth Voice and New Beginnings group for an alternative tour of the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition, at The Atkinson on Thursday 21 February at 11.30am. This tour is free to attend . The Atkinson is on Lord Street in Southport.                                                                   

 

The group will discuss their first interpretations of the artist’s work and how the topics raised in this work still relate to issues around gender, identity and self-expression today.Selfhood is a new young people led photography programme delivered by New Beginnings LGBTQ+ Sefton group and Cultural partners Open Eye Gallery & The Atkinson.

Open Eye Gallery staff have been working with in house photographers in residence, Andy Yates. Liz Wewiora from Open Eye Gallery has been working with The Atkinson and young people from Sefton to programme a series of interactive tours, workshops and responsive photography projects both on & off-site. All of these events respond to the current Mapplethorpe ARTIST ROOMS exhibition and the young people involved will take the lead in delivering sessions to other young people and the general public.
